ELCAP offers taster sessions on good communication

ELCAP is offering a series of taster sessions to introduce staff to a range of different communication tools.

The one-hour events are being held as part of the innovative Our Voice, Our Choice project, which aims to equip Support Practitioners to be confident and effective communication partners for the individuals they work with.

Looking ahead to the session, Karen Cowe, ELCAP’s Registered Manager, said:

“Up to 90% of people with learning disabilities have communication difficulties.  Around half have significant difficulties with both expressing themselves and understanding what others have to say.

While many of our staff are skilled communication partners, we don’t want to rest our laurels.  We want to embed good communication practice across our teams and in all aspects of our care and support services.”

The programme of taster sessions, which will be delivered by Katie Cunningham and Kelly Evans, Speech and Language Therapists with NHS Lothian, is as follows:

  • Communication passports – 15 December 2021
  • Talking Mats – 5 January 2022
  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) – 19 January 2022
  • Communication supports for everyday activities – 2 February 2022
  • Sensory activities for communication – 16 February 2022
  • Key word signing – 2 March 2022

The sessions will run twice on each day of the programme, from 0930 till 1030 and from 1600 to 1700.  Places can be booked by contacting Maggie Henderson.
